  • Child Care Task Force continued to make connections

Trainings/Information Distribution

  • Presentations about child care to service clubs, PA Chamber, and other entities
  • Rachel Hardies, MFC, conducted parenting classes on “Up Your Parenting Game: Support Yourself & Your Family.” Two 4-class, online sessions were held in Feb/March 2022 and April/May 2022. Then a two-class, in-person session was held in November 2022 at the Boys & Girls Club in Sequim, WA.
  • In Fall/Winter 2022, Prevention Works! organized a 3-Webinar Series, which was presented live and online by Victoria, BC’s The White Hatter. Topics included Internet Safety & Digital Literacy for Parents & Caregivers, Gaming Concerns, Balance, Addiction & Opportunities, and Online Porn, Radicalization, Shaming & Disinformation.

Collaboration and Assessment

  • The Child Care Task Force met/meets monthly and continues to strive with collaboration with local agencies, governmental entities and funders. Attended local a Job Fairs in cooperation to promote child care.
  • Universal Home Visiting for Families of Newborns sunsetted in September 2022, with the final agreement to use United Way McCool Grant for Great Beginnings funding to create a digital and print resource guide for new and expectant Families.
  • Adopted the publication of First Teacher Newsletter from Parenting Matters Foundation
  • Board and staff regularly attended meetings and opportunities to connect including Clallam Resilience, Port Angeles Healthy Youth Coalition, Peninsula Early Childhood Committee, Rural Development Initiatives Leadership Program, Nourishing Networks, Olympic Peninsula Healthy Community Coalition, Town Halls, and more.

2021

2020

  • February 26, 2020 Annual Meeting: Child Care Crisis on the Olympic Peninsula presented by Ann Chihan Program Manager at Child Care Aware Washington. This meeting was attended by over 75 individuals including city and county officials, educators and many social services proveiders and general public. A powerpoint was created to illustrate current situation.  We now have 3 powerpoints to share with community groups

    • A Family Friendly Workplace that was created with interviews from 6 local businesses and county government. It discusses child care needs of employees and efforts to become a Family Friendly Workplace.
  • August 5, 2020 Brain Updates- Birth Through Childhood and August 6, 2020 Brain Updates- Adolescence PW! again hosted Ann Renker PhD to build on her presentations Child Brain 101 and Teen Brain 101 from 2019 this was our first attempt at using Zoom for a training instead of inperson.
  • August 18 and 26, 2020 Linda Chamberlain PhD, MPH conducted two Zoom workshops on Breath and iRest… all participants apprecaited the breathing exercises and feelings of relaxation as COVID was on our minds.
  • Fall 2020 our Child Care Task Force Committee completed the production of a Child Care Provider recruitment video about the field of Early Childhood Education and opportunities for a career in child care. This video is fully funded by Molina and Child Care Aware of Washington. You can view the video on our website www.pw4kids.org!

2019

  • January 15, 2019 Annual Meeting: The State of Our Children, Youth, and Families in Clallam County presented by Dr. Allison Berry Unthank MD, MDPH, County Health Officer presented Clallam County Health Assessment Data, highlighting areas of concern and positive responses already underway in Clallam County.   • PW! hosted in collaboration with Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe  in the Red Cedar Hall at Jamestown Tribal Center Dr. Marya Barey, Seattle Psychologist, teacher, mental health supervisor and author  for a presentation Building Resilience Against Burnout and Compassion Fatigue: Strategies for Success

2018

  • Hosted a screening of the film Resilience, followed by a community discussion, in January for 78 people. PW! Board members and event facilitators discussed the film and Adverse Childhood Experiences on KONP in advance of the event.
  • Hosted a training on NEAR Science (Neuroscience, Epigenetics, ACEs, and Resilience) for professionals and community members.
  • Partnered with PASD to bring national author and speaker Ellen Galinsky, author of Mind in the Making, to Port Angeles. She presented to teachers and other professionals during the day, and parents and community members in the evening.
  • The Board devoted hours to strategic planning and identifying priorities for the next two years. The Board approved focusing on primary prevention efforts for young children, ages birth-eight, and developed a strategic plan for 2019-2021.
  • Updated our logo to better represent the work we do in Clallam County.
  • Expanded the number of people receiving the weekly PW! Update to 495 by the end of they year.

2017

  • Began the weekly PW! Update, providing information on prevention-related events, research, and funding opportunities across Clallam County. The first Update was emailed to 410 people.
  • Created and began actively promoting positive parenting practices and local events on our Facebook page.
  • Continued our partnership with the United Way of Clallam County to oversee the Great Beginnings early learning grant program.
  • Mind in the Making 7 Essential Skills mini-messages expanded to reach 900 per week.
  • Obtained funding for the Mind in the Making Baby Booklet to help new parents begin to understand and develop social and emotional skills in their children.
  • Purchased Building Your Bounce, a booklet to help parents with Adverse Childhood Experiences understand how those experiences may impact their parenting and help them develop resiliency.

2016

  • Sponsored a showing of the film Second Hand Hangover and discussion on Adverse Childhood Experiences to community members.
  • Brought Darren Laur, The White Hatter, to present on Digital Citizenship and Cyber Bullying to the Sequim and Crescent School Districts. A parent/community session was also held in Sequim.
  • Mind the Making 7 Essential Skills min-messages expanded to reach 700 per week.
  • Provided funding for Love and Logic & Make Parenting a Pleasure parenting education classes, Play & Learn, and Child Check.
  • Piloted ParenTeen, a support group for parents, guardians, and caregivers of teens and tweens in Clallam County.
  • Began our partnership with United Way of Clallam County to oversee the Great Beginnings early learning grant program.

2015

  • In 2000, Prevention Works! was one of two programs in the state of Washington to receive an Exemplary Program Award for Substance Abuse Prevention.

1999

  • 1999 Prevention Works! was one of eight coalitions in the state to receive a direct Federal grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Grant under the Drug Free Communities Support System.  The award is possible for four years (the first two years at $100,000, subsequent years at $75,000).

1998

  • Prevention Works began in 1998 when seven people who wanted to improve the future for children in Clallam County and to maximize funding possibilities met for the first time.
  • Original Goals were:
  • To focus on at-risk parents with children ages 0 to 4.
  • To target problem behaviors of substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, and violence.
  • To invest in research-based programs and services.
  • To conduct independent evaluations of services.
  • To coordinate services and blend funding.
