Do you have a kindergartener entering school in the fall? If so, please join the Port Angeles School District on Thursday, May 20th at 6:00 p.m. for an information and orientation session for incoming kindergarteners!
Parents will have the opportunity to join an online event to ask questions, hear from Superintendent Martin Brewer and Assistant Superintendent Michelle Olsen. You will then have time to meet your child's new principal and teachers!

June 23, 2021 The Beyond Paper Tigers conference is moving to resilience! If you have not registered for this year's Annual Conference, there is still time. You absolutely will not want to miss it.
The name of the conference is not the only change. CRI's 6th Annual Trauma-Informed: Moving to Resilience conference will look different as well! CRI recognizes the extreme "zoom fatigue" the pandemic has created. We too are "zoomed out" and just want to be back to "normal" where we can build on relationships and connections together, sharing the same space! The option of skipping a year crossed our minds, but our collective work is too important to let a pandemic and fatigue deter us. So, in an effort to circumvent yet another numbing virtual meeting, we have decided to be brave and fearless and offer two half-days of "Speed Conferencing" 2021! Based on the concept of Speed Dating, we will endeavor to bring you state-of-the-art information, but in the condensed, powerful format of twenty-minute sessions that are easy to digest and remember. We will feature 5 adverse categories—childhood, community, culture, circuitry and catastrophic—and 5 resilience themes to parallel the 5 adverse categories.
We're born with it and it's totally natural, and automatic. Ever accidentally breathed in when you were swallowing? That coughing and spluttering is your gag reflex and in babies it's at its strongest. Gagging is a safety response and when you see your baby gagging, it's because they're actually solving the problem – they're moving that piece of food away from their windpipe.
A lot of us get confused, and often mistake the signs of gagging - coughing, spluttering, red in the face, making lots of noise - for choking, when in fact gagging is a very healthy reflex. In fact, its how we learn NOT to choke!
Whilst gagging is very dramatic, choking is for the most part silent. That's why it's so important not to leave little ones alone when they're eating, because that gagging could potentially turn into choking.

Building An "Emotional Toolkit" from PBS Kids for Parents
With intentional play, games, and activities, we can help our kids learn how to identify and name feelings, understand causes of emotions, and develop strategies for healthy expression. Self-awareness, self-control, and self-confidence are important parts of your child's emotional toolkit (and yours, too!). Make space to allow your child to express the emotions they're feeling and help them do it in healthy ways ― as Daniel Tiger sings, "Use your words to say how you feel!"
In Clallam County, parents and guardians can sign up for the Imagination Library via the North Olympic Library System website, NOLS.org, under the Kids and Teens link, or by phoning 360-417-8500, ext. 7733. Registration can also be done curbside at the public libraries in Sequim, Port Angeles, Clallam Bay and Forks.

This paper was a team effort, led by Dr. Dina Burstein, HOPE Project Director. Other authors include: Chloe Yang, a research assistant working on HOPE; Kay Johnson, President of Johnson Group Consulting and long-time HOPE collaborator; Dr. Jeff Linkenbach, Director of The Montana Institute and co-Investigator with HOPE, and Dr. Robert Sege, HOPE National Resource Center Director. "Positive childhood experiences (PCEs) have profound effects on health and development, buffering against and preventing the harms of toxic stress (Bethell et al., 2019). Efforts to translate this science into practice are needed and will improve the effectiveness of current approaches that focus on identifying risks and specific child and family problems."
In this study, family history methods across 3 generations were associated with increased psychiatric risk in offspring and may enable selection of homogenous samples for genetic and biological studies as well as development of screening tools in applied mental health settings.
Lead adult of the after school program (3:30-6), comes in at noon to help with transitions and readying the classrooms. Sub in morning occasionally when other staff are on vacation or out sick. Child centered working environment in small school. Sick leave and vacation, and more perks. Beginning wage dependent on prior experience. Must be willing to be trained if no prior Montessori experience.
